Georgia Southern University, BS in Mathematics
University of Florida, MS in Mathematics
Mercer University, PhD Curriculum and Instruction
Professional Experience (list most recent first):

Graduate Assistant, Dept of Math, University of Florida, 2002-2004
GCTM Offices/Committees:
GCTM Conference Board, Director of Volunteers, 2019-2023
Candidate Statement: The goal of mathematics education remains the same as it always has, to provide students with the language and grammar to express complex scientific ideas clearly and concisely. The climate of mathematics education, however, is ever changing. The expectations of educators continue to increase. It is the role of GCTM to provide a forum to develop and discuss best practices, advocate for classroom educators, and ensure policymakers are informed of all consequences of their decisions. This can be accomplished by remembering that people are the point! All decisions should be measured by their impact on educators’ ability to affect student learning. This requires a constant reminder of educators’ needs while engaging in transparent processes and truly open dialogue. I bring experience in this area. As faculty senate chair at Middle Georgia State University, I was charged with leading the faculty response to the covid-19 pandemic and the University System of Georgia’s changes to post-tenure review…both highly sensitive and politicized issues. As a department chair, I seek daily to accomplish goals established at multiple levels while advocating for faculty. When the hurdles are cleared for educators, then they are left to focus on student learning and engagement. I desire to employ these skills for the benefit of Georgia math educators as a member of the GCTM executive board.

Candidate Statement:
I am a product of the Georgia public school system and the University System of Georgia. Out of all the teachers that have inspired me and kept me going throughout my career, almost all of them are members of the GCTM. I look forward every year to attending the Georgia Mathematics Conference because the conference gives me an opportunity to interact with some truly amazing people, always re-energizes me, and leaves me excited to teach mathematics. Instead of listing many of the challenges we face as mathematics educators, I’d like to point out a hopeful fact now that we live in a post-Covid-pandemic world: Teachers and students are, for the most part, back in classrooms wrestling to teach and learn mathematics. And with this fact, we must guide and advocate for the students who enter our classrooms, not the ones who we hope will enter, and support teachers to do what they love and are trained to do—teach. In my attempt to teach core-level math courses and K-8 preservice math content courses over the past 13 years at Georgia Southern University, I have relied very heavily on my wife (who is a public middle school math teacher), my colleagues and friends, and organizations, such as the GCTM, for guidance and purpose. It is that sense of community that makes the GCTM so special—a group whose mission is to promote, encourage, and reward excellence in the teaching and learning of mathematics education in Georgia. I hope to be a proponent of this mission by serving as the GCTM Vice President for Constitution and Policy.

Through every situation, GCTM has created a space for teachers in Georgia where they are cared for, supported, and equipped for the challenges they face. A key component of ensuring that teachers have access to these opportunities comes in the form of outreach: through making GCTM programs more visible and accessible to teachers state-wide, we can continue to build a more robust. As the Vice President of Regional Services, I will make it my goal to facilitate outreach efforts so teachers can continue receiving the support they need.
